5. The Will Grier factor

I’m the Don’t Play One More Down Of College Football Than You Absolutely Have To guy when it comes to sure-thing top 50 draft picks.

However, Will Grier isn’t a sure-thing top 50 draft pick.

It’s not like one bowl game would’ve rocketed him into the top ten, but it only takes one NFL team to fall in love, and maybe that one extra game would’ve been enough to make him just a wee bit more money.

But why risk it?

The social media world was all over the idea of Grier supposedly “quitting” on his teammates – of course the Mountaineers would’ve been better and might have won if the main man was playing. But would those teammates have been able to repay Grier’s NFL dream or lost millions if he suffered a catastrophic injury?

Of course there’s insurance for big injuries, but that’s not quite as cut-and-dry as you’d think.

Grier didn’t play, West Virginia lost, and life will not only go on, but it’ll be better because he protected his investment, and …
