You’ve Read This Far, So You Get Three Honest Thoughts On The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl
– Sorry, but there’s a reason Northwestern played for the Big Ten title – the rest of the Big Ten West was awful, and the Wildcats didn’t play Penn State and or Ohio State in the regular conference season. Give the team all the credit for getting by Iowa, stopping Michigan State, and finding a way against Purdue and Nebraska. But Wisconsin didn’t have Alex Hornibrook, and again, missing two of the key parts from the East mattered. On the flip side …
– Utah played Washington and Washington State from the North, and lost both games. It had to go to Stanford, and won, and it dealt with Oregon, and won. Granted, the non-conference schedule was very, very lacking – and that includes Northern Illinois and BYU – and the Pac-12 South was miserable, but at least the Utes had to deal with the top teams from the other division.
– The Big Ten hasn’t just shown up over the last three Holiday bowls, it has come up very, very large. Last year’s Washington State team was more than strong enough to at least make the matchup against Michigan State a coin-flip, and … nope. The Spartans won in a blowout. The 2016 Wazzu team should’ve destroyed a depleted Minnesota, but was a big, fat dud in a loss. The USC team that arrived in 2015 couldn’t hold on against an okay Wisconsin to kick off this run.
Super. So Who’s Going To Win The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl?
It’s Utah, and it’s a bowl game. It’s going to win it.
It won’t be a work of art, and Northwestern really is better than it looks – at least, the production has been there to find a way to at least compete in game after game. But the Utah defensive front will control this early on against a Wildcat offense that will sputter and cough just a wee bit more than the Ute attack will.
