You’ve Read This Far, So You Get Three Honest Thoughts On The Raycom Media Camellia Bowl
– Georgia Southern might have been a regular on the FCS and D-IAA playoff circuit, but this is just the second bowl game in the short five-year history of life as an FBS program. The Eagles won the 2015 Go-Daddy Bowl in a blowout over Bowling Green, but this will be a big deal, especially coming off a 2-10 2017 season.
– Bowl games are a big deal to EMU, too. It wasn’t all that long ago when Eastern Michigan was America’s speed bump. How bad has the program been? This is just the second winning season since 1995. This game is just the second bowl game in three years and just the fourth ever in the program. It’s shooting for its second ever bowl win, with the last one coming back in 1987.
– Like all bowl games against option teams – this goes for Minnesota vs. Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane, and Houston vs. Army in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces – it’s all about how well the opposing coaching staff can get the team ready for what’s coming.
Stopping the option is all about discipline, patience, staying in the lanes, and seeing it over and over and over again. That’s a problem during the regular season with a week to prepare, but ULM got two weeks to get ready and it held Georgia Southern to 138 rushing yards and no scores the ground in the win.
Super. So Who’s Going To Win The Raycom Media Camellia Bowl?
The EMU run defense was great late because it went against bad running teams. But when it dealt with the Army option attack, it got hit for 289 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-22 loss. Even so, the MAC’s Eagles aren’t going to get rolled. They’ll keep it close, but they’ll get killed by not being able to convert on enough third down chances.
Georgia Southern will sputter and cough a bit too often, but it’ll do enough to control the clock to survive in another close Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.
