4. Michigan State’s two missed field goals mattered
Sophomore kicker Matt Coghlin earned All-Big Ten honors nailing 16-of-19 field goals on the season. He nailed two 34-yarders in the third quarter, but when he had a chance to give MSU the lead on a 50-yarder, and yanked it wide.
He had another chance to put the team up, but it wasn’t his fault. A low snap led to a fire drill by QB Brian Lewerke that went nowhere, and that was it.
Everything else almost worked according to the Spartan formula. The punting game was fantastic, the defense made up for the miserable offense, there weren’t a slew of mistakes, and the chances were there.
But when there’s no margin for error with a team like this, there can’t be these errors.
