Military Bowl Presented By Northrup Grumman Bowl Players To Watch
DT Ricky Walker, Sr. Virginia Tech: The anchor and All-ACC star of the Hokie defensive front, he came up with 49 tackles with two sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. The 6-2, 300-pounder isn’t massive, but he’s quick, consistent, and he’s been the leader of the D for the last few seasons. When the team needed him over the last part of the season, he came up with his biggest games.
WR Tre Turner, Fr. Virginia Tech: With All-ACC leading receiver Damon Hazelton out hurt over the last two games, Turner stepped up. The 6-2 freshman came up with a good final month with four catches over a three game stretch, and three for 99 yards against a touchdown against Marshall. The hope is for Hazelton to be back and fine, but Turner and Eric Kumah have helped out QB Ryan Willis.
DT Cortez Broughton, Sr. Cincinnati: The First Team All-American Athletic interior pass rusher did everything for the Bearcat interior, producing 45 tackles with 5.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. He’s not huge and doesn’t swallow up the double teams, but he’s quick, can bat down passes, and can take over games.
QB Desmond Ridder, Fr. Cincinnati: It wasn’t originally the plan for the freshman be the leader and star of the offense, but he took over the job early on and came up with a solid first season. With 6-4 and 212 pound size, he looks the next-level part, and he can run as well as push the ball down the field. He ran for 563 yards and five scores, and completed 63% of his passes for close to 2,400 yards with 19 scores and five picks.
