4. The optics are bad for the American Athletic
There can’t be any misfires if you’re the American Athletic Conference.
For a conference that’s trying to scream and yell that it wants to be a part of the conversation for the College Football Playoff, inclusion in the discussion for bigger things, and to get the national respect it so desperately craves, it has to get big things out of all of its teams – not just UCF.
No one’s arguing that UCF isn’t good. At least, no one with a brain is. The argument is the schedule and the weekly grind. There has to be something to show that week after week, it’s a war in the conference.
Tulane did its part in the AutoNation Cure Bowl against Louisiana, but USF didn’t hold up its part.
The league can still have an amazing bowl season with Cincinnati, Houston, Temple and UCF all getting their at-bats. But there’s not a whole lot of margin for error. Getting blown away at home by a decent Conference USA team only feeds the narrative for the other side.
