5. The USF collapse

It was a fitting end to a disastrous second half of the season.

USF gave it a push. It didn’t give up, and it did what it could once QB Blake Barnett came off the bench. But the hole was too big to climb out of, and Marshall was too good.

After starting the season 7-0 with wins over Georgia Tech and Illinois on the resumé, the losses came in a hurry, and they were ugly. The win over Georgia Tech turned out to be the only one against a team that went bowling, and the six straight losses all came to bowl teams.

The offense sputtered over the last month, the defense wasn’t even close, and now, after winning five of its previous six bowl games as a program. USF lost. At home. Badly. And now …
