You’ve Read This Far, So You Get Three Honest Thoughts On The Hyundai Sun Bowl
– Stanford is strong at these bowl things. It lost in an Alamo thriller last year to TCU, but before that it won four of the previous five under David Shaw after dropping an all-timer of a Fiesta Bowl to Oklahoma State. You have to go back to the 2001 Seattle Bowl – coached by Ty Willingham – for the last time the Cardinal came up with a dud of a bowl performance. In the nine bowls since that, the program is 5-4 with all four of the losses decided by four points or fewer.
– Pitt sort of stinks at these bowl things lately. The Panthers are back in the post-season for the first time since losing the 2016 Pinstripe to Northwestern as part of a three bowl game losing streak. The 2013 Little Caesars over Bowling Green was the lone win in a six game stretch. To go way, way back, since the 1981 Sugar over Georgia – when Dan Marino came up with a last-second bomb for the win – Pitt is 6-13 in bowls. Winning this would be a big deal.
– Don’t forget about this game. It’s in a quirky spot as the CBS bowl that starts up just as the third quarter of the Military should be kicking in between Cincinnati and Virginia Tech over on ESPN, and about an hour before Michigan State and Oregon go at it in the Redbox on FOX. It’ll need to hold the attention of a nation, because Missouri and Oklahoma State go off in the AutoZone Liberty 90 minutes after this kicks off.
Super. So Who’s Going To Win The Hyundai Sun Bowl?
Stanford’s defense will have this Pitt ground game figured out with over a month to practice and prepare for it. Both teams are one-dimensional, but the Cardinal will get a little bit out of its Bryce Love-less ground game – Cameron Scarlett isn’t that bad – but it’ll be KJ Costello and the deep shots to JJ Arcega-Whiteside that will define the game. The big Stanford targets will control the game on one side, and the Cardinal D line will get the job done on the other.
