2. Jason Candle’s team whiffed in another bowl
Winning bowl games isn’t everything to a hot coaching candidate, but it isn’t a positive when a guy struggles in bowl games.
39-year-old Toledo head coach Jason Candle is going to be a big-time head coach at a big-time program soon. He’s the next Matt Campbell – at least.
However, after winning the 2015 Boca Raton Bowl as the interim head man after Campbell left for Iowa State, Candle is now 0-for-3 in bowls as the full-time head man.
Losing to Appalachian State in the 2016 Camellia was fine – it was a good fight against a fantastic team. But in a rematch the following season in the Dollar General, the Rockets were loaded and coming off a MAC championship run. They didn’t show up in a 34-0 loss.
FIU is good, and this was a good game and hardly a stunning loss. But again, upwardly mobile head coaches can’t get a reputation for biffing bowl games.
