You’ve Read This Far, So You Get Three Honest Thoughts On The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
– With no conference championship to shoot for, and with the loss to Utah, the bowl game now becomes everything for a BYU program that just can’t seem to get things consistently going. The Poinsettia Bowl win over Wyoming in 2016 was the last bowl victory for the program since 2012, going 1-3 over the last four. As a massive favorite, BYU had better win this in a walk – that’s where the expectations are, at least for this week.
– Western Michigan is one of the nation’s worst bowl programs, at least with a decent sample size. Starting with your 1961 Aviation Bowl, and on through the 2016 Cotton Bowl Classic, the Broncos are 1-7 all-time in bowls. The lone win was when the 2015 rowed the boat past Middle Tennessee in the Bahamas – winning this would be a giant steaming deal.
– This might just be the most unpredictable of bowl games, only because of Western Michigan – which team will show up? Yeah, the Bronco defense was a disaster over the second half of the season, but this might just be one of those teams that finds another level with a few weeks off to take a breath.
Super. So Who’s Going To Win The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl?
WMU isn’t good on converting third downs, and the BYU defense is going to be rested and motivated. This won’t be anything consistently pretty offensively, but the production and points will be there, and Cougars will be just effective enough defensively to pull this off.
It’ll take a full four quarters to get this done, and WMU will turn it loose, but this has to be a great performance for BYU. It won’t be, but it’ll still get the win with the D coming through with a few key late stops.
