Buffalo (10-3) vs. Troy (9-3) Game Preview
Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Dollar General Bowl
– A case could be made that these are the second-best teams in their respective conferences. Buffalo blew a big lead in the MAC Championship against Northern Illinois, and Troy lost the regular season finale against Appalachian State to miss out on playing for the Sun Belt title.
The Trojans suffered an offensive power outage late in the season – scoring just 22 points over the last two games – but the defense was the real star throughout the campaign, especially up front.
– This should be a motivated Buffalo team, at least in theory. After dropping the MAC title game like it did in brutal fashion, overconfidence shouldn’t be an issue. This was a strong enough team to roll through most of the conference season, blow away Rutgers on the road, and beat Temple. Just the third bowl game in the program’s history, this Bull team can still do something special. Winning 11 games would be amazing, and coming up with the school’s first bowl win – losing to UConn in the 2008 International and to San Diego State in the 2013 Famous Idaho Potato – would be huge.
– It’s not a true home game for Troy – the school is about 160 miles up the road from Mobile – but it’ll have more fans in place and they should bring at least a little bit of energy to the game. At least in terms of reported attendance, over 32,000 were there for the 2016 Dollar General when Troy beat Ohio. The program has no problem bringing the effort in bowl games, winning its last three including two straight under Neal Brown.
