The penalties were brutal.
Cincinnati got hit with 13 for 96 yards, and Virginia Tech was nailed with ten for 92.
They were mostly ticky-tack sins, but they were just enough to kill the flow of the relatively dead-even game. This was nothing new for a Cincinnati team that was the worst in the American Athletic conference in penalty yards, but Virginia Tech only got hit with 5.4 penalties per game.
For all of the problems, the Hokies weren’t bad at turning the ball over; But they lost the ball twice to go along with all of the other mistakes.
