Army 70, Houston 14: 5 Thoughts On The Armed Forces Bowl

3. It took two to tango

Army was brilliant, and this bowl game was all about the unstoppable nature of the offense, but Houston had a hand in this, too.

Stopping the option is about time, preparation, and more time, and more preparation, and yet the extra weeks off didn’t seem to make a different to a Houston defense that couldn’t tackle, was badly out of place, and didn’t have any answers to come up with any sort of stop, much less do anything consistently well.

But the Houston offense didn’t work, either.

And to run salt into the wound, the bowl game was dropkicking the poor Cougars, too (and it was ten times) …

The Cougar defense has been a wee bit rough all season long, but at least the offense has been able to keep up the pace. Against Army … nope.

And now, under Major Applewhite, that’s three bowls, and three rough losses. The 34-10 loss to San Diego State in the 2016 Las Vegas was forgivable, considering Applewhite had to step in and take over for Tom Herman. Last year’s loss to Fresno State in Hawaii was a battle, and now there’s this.
