4. QB Sam Ehlinger, Jr. Texas
The guy got lost a bit in the shuffle of a wild and crazy Big 12 season, but that’s not happening in 2019.
It was Kyler Murray’s Big 12, and Will Grier wasn’t far behind. Even Taylor Cornelius got the national love in Oklahoma State’s win over Texas.
But after splitting time as a freshman, and growing into the job as a sophomore, this should be Ehlinger’s chance to make the offense rock at an even higher level in Tom Herman’s third season.
All Ehlinger did was complete 64% of his passes for 3,127 yards and 25 touchdowns with just five picks. Two of those interceptions came in the opener against Maryland. Two came in the win over Kansas, and one came in the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma – he went on a run of ten straight games without an interception.
He also barreled for 13 touchdowns, too – five of them came in the two games against the Sooners – looking Tebow-like with his power running. He also went all Promise Speech after the loss to OU …
Now he’s the star of the program, with the offense and the starting quarterback job all his go manage. If most of his receivers return, the numbers will be amazing. Even if he needs a few new targets to rise up, look out.
