West Virginia (8-1) vs. Oklahoma State (5-5) Game Preview
One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win
The … the … the …
The Mountaineers are so amazing offensively, they don’t get any credit for also having one of the Big 12’s best defenses, especially when it comes to getting into the backfield.
Now, part of the reason for being so statistically amazing is the schedule – they haven’t faced Oklahoma State or Oklahoma yet. But the pass rush is terrific and the group is outstanding at getting behind the line.
Oklahoma State’s offensive line is just okay in pass protection.
In a firefight like this will be, the one key difference might just be one big play and one big sack. West Virginia’s line can protect Will Grier. Oklahoma State’s offensive line can’t.
One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win
Oklahoma State can bring a little bit of heat, too.
The Cowboys lead the Big 12 and are fourth in the nation in tackles for loss, and the pass rush has been fantastic all season. Grier hasn’t been under a whole lot of pressure so far, but that changes this week against a group that get to the quarterback from several spots.
But, of course, to hang with West Virginia – unless you’re Iowa State – you need to be able to crank up the offense to keep up.
Taylor Cornelius has been amazing for most of the season, and last week – despite a bad two-point conversion attempt in crunch time – he hit Oklahoma with 501 yards and three touchdowns in a brilliant performance. This is coming off a 287-yard day against Baylor and 321 yards and three scores against Texas.
He has actually thrown for more yards over the last three games than Grier. He’ll be able make this wild and crazy, but …
What’s Going To Happen
Grier is too hot.
The interceptions have slowed, with just one in the last three games and two in the last four, hitting the 330-yard passing mark in every game but the loss to Iowa State. Oklahoma State isn’t going to control the game or the clock enough to do what the Cyclones did to neutralize Grier.
If you’ve been watching the Big 12 lately, you know exactly how this is going to roll.
It’ll be a back-and-forth battle with lots of yards, lots of mood swings, and lots of momentum changes. But again, when it comes down to that big moment, the West Virginia defense will get the play the Oklahoma State defense won’t.
The Mountaineers will stay alive for the College Football Playoff hunt and be right there to get into the Big 12 Championship. Oklahoma State will have to wait until next week at TCU to get bowl eligible.
