UAB (9-1) vs. Texas A&M (6-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why UAB Will Win
The Blazer defense is dead serious.
Okay, so this is the first game of the season against a Power Five program, and it’s been able to crush the weak and the sad of the Conference USA world, but it’s also got the nation’s best pass rush, it leads all of college football in third down stops, and it’s amazing in the secondary – partly due to all of the pressure.
North Texas and Mason Fine managed to crank out over 300 yards through the air – and lose. No one else has cracked the 200-yard mark, and it’s not for a lack of trying.
After giving up four touchdown passes in the first two games, the Blazers have allowed just one in six of the last seven games – the North Texas game has been the exception.
And how? Again, pressure, pressure, pressure.
Southern Miss was able to move the ball last week in a 26-23 loss, but when needed, the heat was turned up. The Blazers finished with a season-high seven sacks.
And who has allowed the most sacks in the SEC so far this season?
Kellen Mond, look … out.
One Reason Why Texas A&M Will Win
Grind, grind, grind.
Texas A&M should be able to beat UAB at its own game, only with SEC talent.
UAB loves to control the clock and the tempo, and again, it likes to bring the pressure. Texas A&M is better at the time of possession game, and it’s got the pass rush to be a big problem in the Blazer backfield.
The Blazers might have a terrific ground attack, but A&M’s Trayveon Williams is kicking it all in late in the season.
Not used all that much as a workhorse, he had a few light games after tearing off four 100-yard games in the first six. And then he rumbled for big gashes in the loss to Auburn, and last week against Ole Miss he dominated with 228 yards and a score on 31 carries.
UAB’s D has been fantastic, but it hasn’t seen a back like this. The one time it allowed more than 200 yards on the ground was Coastal Carolina – it was the only loss.
The Aggies have rushed for more than 200 yards in each of the last two games.
What’s Going To Happen
Be very, very, very careful with this one, A&M.
This is supposed to be the breather of a cupcake game after dealing with Auburn and Ole Miss and before facing LSU. But the Aggies are already bowl eligible, and they might just let down a wee bit against – slightly arguably – the best team in Conference USA.
UAB has the talent, the want-to, and the schemes to make this a 60-minute fight that should turn into a grind.
Texas A&M will get too much out of its offense in the fourth quarter – the game will open up a wee bit – but expect UAB to be nasty.
