Toledo (5-4) vs. Northern Illinois (6-3) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
It’s been rough, it’s been ugly, and it’s been a fight, but Northern Illinois has managed to win five straight games and go unbeaten in the MAC so far.
It can’t win the West on Wednesday night, but a win knocks out Toledo, and it all but ends it – it can take the West next week with a win over Miami University or against Western Michigan to close.
Toledo needs to win out – it’ll beat Kent State and Central Michigan to close – and get another NIU win to get to the MAC title game.
The Rocket offense has turned it on over the last two weeks, hanging 51 points on Western Michigan and 45 against Ball State, but it has to figure out an NIU defense that cranks up one of the nation’s best pass rushes.
How are the Huskies doing this without an offense? That defensive front helps, and it’s living off of turnover margin. +7 on the year, NIU has taken the ball away 17 times. But against Toledo, if the offense isn’t working, forget it.
The Huskies haven’t faced any sort of an offense or a passing game over this winning streak, and yet its still getting ripped up through air.
If Akron and Ohio can throw on this secondary, Toledo won’t have an issue.
Eli Peters stepped into the quarterback job last week and threw for 327 yards against Ball State – with Mitchell Guadagni hurting with a shoulder injury – but he also threw four picks.
Mistakes won’t be enough for NIU to pull this off.
The Huskies don’t move the offense enough, and they’re not going to move the chains on a Rocket defense that’s not all that great, but is okay at getting off the field.
It won’t be beautiful, but the Rockets will take it.
