Syracuse (8-3) vs. Boston College (7-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win
The Boston College pass defense can get hit hard.
The Eagle defense might be solid overall, and the pass rush is great, but the secondary has fallen off the map over the last few weeks allowing 281 yards or more and close to 1,000 yards in the last three games.
Trevor Lawrence was deadly accurate in Clemson’s win, and Florida State’s Deondre Francois bombed away for 322 yards last week to pull it off. And now it’s up to Tommy DeVito – most likely – to make up for the Notre Dame performance and get the passing game going.
He struggled, throwing for just 105 yards with two picks with the spotlight on after Eric Dungey got knocked out of the game, but now he’s had a full week to get ready.
On the other side, the Syracuse pass rush has to kick back in after not doing much to get into the Irish backfield. The Boston College offensive line is fine, but it gives up plays behind the line and a few too many tackles for loss.
One Reason Why Boston College Will Win
AJ Dillon should be able to keep the Syracuse offense off the field.
The Eagle rushing star pounded on the Orange for 193 yards and three touchdowns in the 42-14 win last week, and now he’s going against a run D that held up okay against Notre Dame, but gave up 203 yards against Louisville in the shootout the week before.
Commit to the run, and it’ll work.
And yes, the Syracuse pass rush will be fine, but the Boston College line will be better.
The Eagles didn’t dominate the miserable Florida State offensive line like it needed to, but the Syracuse offensive front will give up sacks and should have a problem keeping DeVito from being under constant pressure.
DeVito – again, assuming Dungey won’t go – might be a talent and will be the future of Orange football, but he’s got to prove he’s ready.
Coming off of two straight losses, and at home, BC will bring the intensity.
What’s Going To Happen
Boston College will get over its two-game struggle by going with what works – running the ball, controlling the clock, and relying on the defensive front to win its battles.
As good as Syracuse has been this year, the Eagles are going to rise back up with a great defensive performance at home, and the offensive backfield owning the game to counteract the aggressive Orange D. BC isn’t big on time of possession with its style, but it’ll run well enough to have the clock tilted in its favor.
