Rutgers (1-10) vs. Michigan State (6-5) Game Preview
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
If there’s one team that fits exactly what Rutgers needs, Michigan State is it.
The Spartans don’t have any explosion on offense, the games are played slowly and deliberately, and with there to be several chances to take advantage of the close battle and get one or two big moments – maybe – to take over.
MSU is dead last in the Big Ten in third down conversions, there’s no offense, there are no points lately – managing just six points in each of the last two games – and the passing game is a disaster.
How bad is this? With starter Brian Lewerke banged up, the Spartans have no touchdowns in the last three games and are completing just 37% of their passes over the last two weeks. It’s not for a lack of trying, but it’s just not working.
Rutgers needs to stay in the hunt. The secondary hasn’t been bad, and the defense overall has been able to keep things in range. The losses keep on mounting, but they hung around with Northwestern, came back against Wisconsin with a few points, and didn’t get rolled by Penn State. But …
One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win
Rutgers still isn’t scoring, and forget about running the ball.
The Spartans have the nation’s top run defense that’s on a historic run, allowing just 868 yards on the year, with nine teams failing to come up with more than 120 yards. The Rutgers offensive line is a plus, and it’s been solid over the last two games against Michigan and Penn State, but … nope.
The ground attack is going to be stuffed, and that means Rutgers has to throw. That’s going to be a problem.
The Scarlet Knights have thrown a nation-most 20 picks and are dead last in college football in passing efficiency. There are too many giveaways, there aren’t any long drives, and there are just no points.
Ever since the opener against Texas State, Rutgers has failed to score more than 17 points in any game, with just seven points in each of the last two games.
Against this defense, it’s not going to happen.
What’s Going To Happen
You know that amazing Chiefs-Rams game on Monday Night Football? This is going to be the exact opposite of that.
The Rutgers offense will be fortunate to come close to 200 yards, Michigan State will come up with a few early scores, and that will be enough. It won’t be 7-6, but it might not be far off.
