Rice (1-10) vs. LSU (8-2) Game Preview

One Reason Why Rice Will Win

So what is Rice doing right?

The passing game is starting to look a wee bit stronger.

In a perfect world under head coach Mike Bloomgren, the Owls are a power running team. But over the last three games, the offense has been able air it out a wee bit with well over 700 yards, including a 313-yard day against UTEP.

The LSU passing game started to click a little bit down the field against Arkansas, but the defense took its foot of the gas and had problems late. The amazing Tiger secondary allowed 200 yards or more through the air in three of the last four games.

It has to be soft against the Owls.

However, to have any shot of keeping this from being brutal, Rice has to hope LSU mails it in as it preps for the showdown at Texas A&M to close out the regular season.

One Reason Why LSU Will Win

Rice just can’t move the chains.

For all of the Owls’ problems, not being able to convert on third downs is the biggest issue. They’ve failed to hit more than 25% of their chances in five of the last six games, and it’s a killer.

They just can’t keep up.

Whether it was freshman Wiley Green, or senior Shawn Stankavage, the Owls are getting okay play from their quarterbacks, but it’s not good enough.

LSU might be giving up a few yards through the air, but it clamps down when it has to, and it’s a lock to pick off at least a few passes – bad things happen when Rice presses.

There won’t be any ground game from the Owls against the LSU defensive front, and third down conversions will be non-existent.

And then there’s Rice’s big issue this week …

What’s Going To Happen

LSU is going to come out and play well after the ragged way the Arkansas game ended.

The SEC title and College Football Playoff are gone, but the Tigers can still get a New Year’s Six bowl game by winning their last two games. Considering the predictions of doom and gloom before the season, that would be an amazing payoff.

It’s Senior Day – next week’s game is in College Station. LSU is going to drop a hammer.
