Purdue (5-4) vs. Minnesota (4-5) Game Preview
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
Minnesota is a defensive mess.
Defensive coordinator Robb Smith has been sacked, but just because PJ Fleck kicked him out of the boat, things aren’t about to get a whole lot stronger.
The Gophers have allowed 53 points or more in two the last three games, and 30 or more in every Big Ten game so far. And now David Blough is about to go off.
He and the Purdue passing game are accurate enough to keep the chains moving, but it’s the rushing attack that has to take advantage of a Minnesota defensive front that’s getting ripped to shreds.
Nebraska ran for 383 yards, and Illinois is still running wild after tearing off 430 yards and averaged over 12 yards per carry last week. Purdue might be a passing team, but it’s got the speed to average well over five yards per pop when Blough isn’t bombing away.
One Reason Why Minnesota Will Win
Keep it going, Tanner Morgan.
Purdue might have a great passing attack, but its secondary gives up big yards just as fast with one of the worst pass defenses in college football.
Morgan stepped in a few weeks ago and has been solid, hitting on big passes and throwing for close to 800 yards and five touchdowns over the last three games.
Purdue’s secondary has been lit up for close to 1,100 yards with five touchdowns over the last three games, and Minnesota has to give it a shot and start bombing away from the start.
What’s Going To Happen
Expect a whole lot of big plays and a whole lot of offense, with more of it on the Purdue side.
The Gophers were able to rise up and surprise at home against Indiana two weeks ago, and they’ll be motivated at a whole other level in desperation mode, but that defense isn’t going to be fixed with one firing.
