Pitt (6-4) vs. Wake Forest (5-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
All of a sudden, Pitt has turned into 2013 Auburn.
The running game was fine all year, and then … kaboom.
484 yards on Duke, 254 on Virginia Tech, and 492 on Virginia Tech. Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall have been Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton hitting home run after home run.
Ollison tore off 235 yards and three scores on just 16 carries against Virginia Tech, Hall averaged 27 yards per carry against the Hokies and raced through the rain for 229 yards and three scores against Virginia.
And now they’re going against a Wake Forest defense that inexplicably closed down NC State last week, but couldn’t handle Syracuse and got trucked by Clemson for 471 yards.
The Demon Deacon offense is working again, but the defensive front is about to get hammered really, really hard.
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
(Dated reference groan alert coming … dreadfully sorry, but can’t be avoided.)
Hellllllooooo, Jamie Newman.
With QB Sam Hartman out for the year, all was lost, Wake Forest was done, thanks for playing, see you next year. And then Newman stepped in and threw for 297 yards and three scores in a brilliant performance to beat Ryan Finley and NC State last week to keep bowl hopes alive.
Nah, the Demon Deacon defense isn’t going to slow anyone down, but the offense should be able to keep up the pace on a porous passing defense that gave up 200 yards or more in six of the last seven games, and was hit for ten touchdowns in the last four games.
Throw in the rushing offense that’s among the best in the conference, and Wake Forest should be able to keep up the pace without much of a problem.
What’s Going To Happen
Here’s the deal. Wake Forest has to win either this week or next week at Duke to become bowl eligible. Pitt has to win this week to take the Coastal title and face Clemson for the ACC championship.
It would be so, so Pitt to lose this. But it won’t happen.
The Panthers can lose this week and still win the division, but it’ll either have to win at Miami or get some help. This will be a wild and fun shootout with both teams trading huge shots.
But the Pitt running game has been too good and too strong. It’ll get massive performances out of the stars in the backfield to pull off one of the nation’s most surprising seasons.
