Pitt (7-4) vs. Miami (6-5) Game Preview
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
The linebackers are experienced enough and smart enough to handle what’s coming from the Pitt running game.
The Hurricanes were run on by Boston College, and Georgia Tech was Georgia Tech, but no one has been able to gouge the Miami defensive front for big yards. Only North Carolina was able to average more than five yards per carry, and it lost big.
The Pitt offense is about hitting the home run with the ground game. It was able to grind it out a bit last week against Wake Forest in the win, but it’s going to have to be prepared to not get the big runs that have changed the season around.
The Panthers managed to beat Georgia Tech despite running for 138 yards, but when they were held to their two worst rushing games of the season – against UCF and Notre Dame – they lost. Miami has the ability to swarm against one-dimensional attacks, and it’s more than good enough to pitch a gem, keeping this thing to around 150 yards.
The Pitt passing game isn’t anything special, but …
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
Miami can’t throw, either.
The Canes might have come up with a decent game overall against Virginia Tech, but they passing attack still isn’t rocking. It hasn’t thrown for 200 yards in any of the last five games, and last week was the first time in a month it came up with more than one touchdown pass. Things aren’t about to get much better with leading receiver Jeff Thomas now reportedly out/leaving the program.
When Miami throws for two touchdown passes or more, it’s 5-0, and it’s 1-5 when it throws for fewer. The Panther pass defense isn’t a rock, but it’ll catch a break this week – one of the team’s biggest weaknesses won’t be exposed.
Even with the struggles, Pitt has allowed fewer than two touchdown passes in two of the last three games and in five games overall.
Of course, when it comes to Miami, everything feeds off of the Turnover Chain, especially at home. But the Canes are the ones giving it away lately, and Pitt leads the ACC with the fewest giveaways.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s not the revenge game for last year’s loss in Pittsburgh, but Miami will take any sort of a win at the point.
There’s no pressure on. The Canes are bowl eligible, and Pitt has bigger and better things to do preparing for Clemson in the ACC Championship, but this will be a big deal for the home team.
Beat Pitt, and with two straight wins, and seven wins overall with a victory over the team that’s playing for the title would pull the season up out of the nosedive.
The defensive front will do just enough against the Pitt running game to get the job done in a low-scoring battle, overcoming yet another rough day from the offense.
