Nebraska (4-7) vs. Iowa (7-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Nebraska Will Win
Well, look at Nebraska winning a tight defensive battle when the offense doesn’t go off, taking down Nebraska in a 9-6 slugfest.
The Huskers are playing well, with a collapse against Northwestern keeping this from being a game for bowl eligibility. But there’s hope, with the offense showing explosion, the passing game has been terrific, and the mistakes are starting to slow down a little bit.
Iowa might have a nasty defensive front seven against the run, and the secondary is keeping teams from being too consistently accurate, but the Huskers are able to air it, and they’ve got just enough balance to hit the Hawkeyes in a few different ways.
In the final game of the season, the team is about to turn it loose.
The Huskers threw for well over 240 yards in each of the last seven games before the Michigan State game, and they’ll put the pressure on from the start.
One Reason Why Iowa Will Win
Nebraska is good at forcing turnovers, but Iowa is better at taking the ball away.
The secondary has been a machine over the second half of the season, coming up with 15 interceptions in the last seven games. Yes, it’s possible to push the ball deep on the Hawkeyes, and yes, teams have had a little bit of success, but the D wins more than its share of battles.
Iowa knows it has the passing game that can work at any time that Nathan Stanley gets hot, but the running of freshman Mekhi Sargent – who got in a ton of work in the blowout over Illinois – and Toren Young are doing more for the O.
Nebraska’s run defense can take a few hits, and Iowa will start out the game trying to pound away. There might be a ton of flash and dash for the Huskers, but the Hawkeyes are better on the lines.
But more than anything else, Iowa has only lost the turnover battle once overall – the loss to Wisconsin – and is a +8 in the last seven games.
What’s Going To Happen
Turnovers have been one of the biggest keys to the Nebraska turnaround. It came up with four takeaways in the first five games, and 16 in the last six. But Iowa isn’t going to screw up enough for the Huskers to get the help.
Iowa will grind out the running game and control the clock throughout, and while the D will bend, it won’t break enough for the Huskers to get comfortable. It’ll be an interesting game that will go the full four quarters, but even though this is the final game for Nebraska, Iowa will hold on.
