Michigan (8-1) vs. Rutgers (1-8) Game Preview
One Reason Why Michigan Will Win
The Rutgers offense doesn’t score enough.
This has been a fully-focused, angry Michigan defense that’s playing like it’s trying to make a statement with every play.
No. 1 in the nation in total defense, No. 1 in pass efficiency defense, and allowing under 100 yards per game on the ground, this thing has been a force.
And the Rutgers offense? It hasn’t scored more than 17 points in any game since the 35-7 victory over Texas State to start the season, and now it has to come up with something wacky just to move the ball.
The Scarlet Knights are dead last in the nation in scoring and last in the Big Ten in total offense. There’s no downfield passing game, little running game, and when do-it-all star Raheem Blackshear isn’t making things happen, there’s no explosion.
This isn’t the type of Michigan defense to go against when you’re still trying to figure it all out.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
As bad as the Scarlet Knights have been offensively, the defense has been able to keep things relatively close.
The secondary has been strong over the last four games. Part of the reason is because the run defense has gotten pounded on, but it’s also been decent, allowing teams to convert around just 50% of their passes with no one throwing for more than 156 yards in any of those four.
To make this even remotely close, the Scarlet Knights not only have to win the turnover battle, but they have to win it by a large margin. Michigan isn’t big on giving the ball away, but Rutgers has done a nice job of not screwing up – it hasn’t turned the ball over in the last two games.
After the emotion of the Michigan State and Penn State games, Rutgers needs Michigan to come in flat and a bit sloppy. It needs a few breaks, it needs to slow things down, and it needs to be perfect.
What’s Going To Happen
Can Rutgers just score? It’ll come up with a few points, but the Wolverines will get up fast and will coast from there.
It’ll be simple formula – Shea Patterson will lead the way to two touchdowns in the first few minutes, and then it’ll be all about the running game from there.
The Wolverines will put up a massive number at halftime, and Rutgers will get some garbage time scores.
