Miami University (4-6) vs. Northern Illinois (7-3) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
How much will Northern Illinois care now that it has the MAC West locked up?
With Western Michigan inexplicably losing to Ball State on Tuesday night, NIU is going to the MAC Championship to face …
Miami University? Probably not, but the RedHawks are still alive – at least for a little while as the game goes on. If Buffalo takes out Ohio, the it’s over and the Bulls play NIU. If the Bobcats win, MU needs to beat Ball State, has to hope for Buffalo to lose at Bowling Green, and needs Ohio to beat Akron.
Got all of that? Just beat NIU, and keep bowl hopes alive.
To do that, though, the RedHawks have to come up with something positive against a Northern Illinois defense with the nation’s best pass rush and a run D that’s stuffing everything.
The Huskies have finally started to crank up the offense a little bit, too, coming up with its two best performances of the year in the last two games – the wins over Akron and Toledo.
There’s still no downfield passing game for NIU, but the running game has been fantastic, cranking up 235 yards or more in five of the last six games and flirting with 300 yards in each of the last two.
Even though the motivation might not be there, NIU will get the ground attack going against an inconsistent RedHawk defensive front, and the pass rush will do just enough to force a few key turnovers.
The Huskies might have a bigger game to come, but it’s the final home game of the year. They’ll show up.
