Maryland (5-6) vs. Penn State (8-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
Everything that just happened offensively against Ohio State … do that again.
The Terp attack doesn’t always work, but when it does, it’s devastating.
Michigan State has the nation’s best run defense and is on a potentially historic pace.
At Iowa, there were massive wind gusts that killed any threat of a passing game, letting the Hawkeyes put everyone up to slow the ground game down. And, of course, Michigan has one of the best defenses in college football.
That’s what it took to keep Maryland’s running attack down over the last several weeks.
Against everyone else, the Terps are running wild, with 290 yards or more five of the last eight games, and close to 800 in the last two including the brilliant performance against Ohio State.
Penn State’s run defense hasn’t exactly been a brick wall over the second half of the season, and it can be hit for well over 200 yards without an issue. However …
One Reason Why Penn State Will Win
Maryland’s defense didn’t slow down Dwayne Haskins and the Ohio State passing game.
Penn State needs to be patient.
It’s been balanced lately and hasn’t relied on a banged up Trace McSorley, but the Maryland pass rush is non-existent and the D will give up plenty of third down conversions.
On the other side, getting behind the line isn’t the cure to stopping what Maryland does with its blocking scheme and ground game – it’s more like the 2013 Auburn attack that’s more like a glorified option – but the Nittany Lions are fantastic at generating pressure from the outside.
Funnel everything inside, expect the linebackers to tackle, and make sure Anthony McFarland and company aren’t ripping through the second level with a head of steam.
And then let McSorley and the offense take care of the rest.
What’s Going To Happen
Once again, the Maryland offense will be fine, but the defense won’t be able to get the job done.
It’s not going to be the up-and-down shootout of the Ohio State game, but there will be just enough big plays to keep this interesting.
But just like the heartbreaking loss to the Buckeyes, Maryland won’t come through on the one or two key moments it’ll need to pull off the win.
McSorley and the Penn State offense will.
