LSU (9-2) vs. Texas A&M (7-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why LSU Will Win
Step One against Texas A&M: Stop … the … run.
The Aggie lines have been terrific, and it all works around the great play of Trayveon Williams and the mobility of Kellen Mond.
But the LSU defensive front has been a brick wall – for the most part.
Alabama went Alabama on the Tigers, and Mississippi State and Florida were able to move the ball, but the front seven has to attack from the start and not let Williams get into space. There aren’t a slew of sacks or tackles for loss, but the linebackers are peerless and the NFL talent in the secondary will win its share of battles.
Time of possession, dominate the turnover battle, and be great on third down defense.
If LSU wins the running game battle, it wins the game. But …
One Reason Why Texas A&M Will Win
Again, it is possible to run on this LSU defense.
A&M won’t bring the power of Bama or Florida, but it’ll get Mond going just enough to be annoying. The running game was just okay for most of the season, but it found a groove over the last three games with well over 700 yards with two touchdowns in each.
The Aggies can hold their own on the lines, and in this game against this team, winning the time of possession battle will mean everything.
LSU isn’t explosive enough to get into a shootout or come up with big comebacks, and that’s where A&M’s style will make a difference. The Aggies will hold the ball for well over 35 minutes – like it always does.
The key will be takeaways. A&M’s D doesn’t generate enough of them, and there can’t be a slew of mistakes. This is the game to run, win with the amazing punting game, own the field position battle, and go ultra-conservative at home.
What’s Going To Happen
The Aggies are going to own the clock and control the game throughout. The nation’s second-best run defense will make Joe Burrow throw to win, and while he’ll have his moments, he won’t be able to do enough to pull this off.
At home, it won’t be scintillating, but it’ll seem like A&M always has the ball as it works its ways to 200 rushing yards and a fantastic eighth win in Jimbo Fisher’s first season.
