LSU (7-2) vs. Arkansas (2-7) Game Preview
One Reason Why LSU Will Win
Even after the tough loss to Alabama, this is still the CFP seventh-best team in college football with the Sugar Bowl still there as a fantastic goal to shoot for.
Last week might have been deflating, but as the playoff committee basically said, losing to Bama is losing to Bama. But as it showed against Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Auburn, when the defense needs to come up with a big stop, it can do it.
Now, the Tiger defense needs to gear it back up again after getting run over, forcing Arkansas to become a passing team while dominating on the lines.
There’s no downfield air show for the Hogs – this isn’t how it’s supposed to work under Chad Morris – and it’s not going to start getting healthy now against this loaded Tiger secondary.
The LSU offense has to do what it does well. It has to keep the chains moving against a defense that doesn’t come up with enough meaningful stops. The Tigers don’t have to take any chances to pull this off, but …
One Reason Why Arkansas Will Win
Just how banged up and bruised – both physically and in terms of ego – is LSU?
As great as the defense has been throughout the season, it just got steamrolled over by Bama for 281 yards. Mississippi State and Florida each got physical on the way to over 200 yards – that’s three times in the last four games someone has hit two bills.
Arkansas freshman Rakeem Boyd has rushed for 100 yards or more in three of the last four games, and ran for 99 in the other.
This wasn’t quite how it was supposed to work under Chad Morris, but the Hogs have become a solid running team, pounding on Ole Miss for 300 yards and rumbling over Vanderbilt for 207 yards last week.
They have to get physical from the start, mainly because the passing attack won’t do anything consistently well.
This isn’t an explosive LSU offense, and if Arkansas can control the clock with its ground game, it should be able to keep this game within range late.
What’s Going To Happen
LSU might not be able to quite gear it up to make this a blowout, but it’ll find ways to score against an Arkansas defense that’s not awful, but doesn’t hold up when it needs to.
The Tigers will win on the lines as the game goes on. Even though they don’t have a running game, the offense will keep things moving just enough to take control of the game throughout.
It won’t be anything pretty, but after last week, LSU will take it.
