Liberty (4-5) vs. Auburn (6-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Liberty Will Win
Auburn just can’t run the ball.
The Liberty run defense isn’t a brick wall, but it should get a bit of a break this week against a Tiger ground game that was terrific against Ole Miss, and that was about it.
Auburn – the program that got to the SEC Championship last year and made the college football world shake in 2013 – ran for 102 yards last week in the loss to Georgia. Before that, it failed to hit 100 yards in four of the previous six games.
More than anything else, Liberty has to hope for Auburn’s head to be in Tuscaloosa.
The Tigers are bowl eligible, and this game just doesn’t mean a whole lot in the bigger scheme of things. Not when there’s a chance to take down Bama for the second year in a row.
This is a feisty Flames team that’s good at pushing for a full sixty minutes. In the ultimate sandwich game between Georgia and the Tide, there’s a chance this could be a wee bit of a fight for more than a half.
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
It’s the final home game of the year for the Tigers, and there’s still work to do.
Considering what a rocky year this has been, and with three losses in the last five games, don’t expect this team to take anything for granted.
Auburn isn’t going to use this game as time to rest up and relax. This is when it’s time to tune-up for the job-saver.
Gus Malzahn isn’t going to get fired – the buyout is too big, and yeah, he’s good enough not to get rid of. However, there is no losing the Liberty, and this game has to be used as an extra practice.
Liberty might have a dangerous offense, but its secondary is about to be hit very, very hard.
Jarrett Stidham didn’t go off against Georgia, but against a defense that gave up 540 yards through the air against UMass, and has allowed close to 400 yards in four of its last six games … look out.
What’s Going To Happen
Auburn is going to care enough to keep trying, at least for a half.
Liberty really does have a good offense, but it’s about to have a nightmare of a time against the Auburn defensive front. The Tigers will end this after about 20 minutes, but they’ll finally enjoy a blowout for the first time in weeks.
