Texas Tech (5-5) vs. Kansas State (4-6) Game Preview
One Reason Why Texas Tech Will Win
The Kansas State offense isn’t good enough.
The pass defense has had its moments, but almost everyone on the schedule who can throw – other than Oklahoma State – got to 300 yards with ease, and everyone who can’t throw – for the most part – can get to 200 yards.
But it’s the offense that’s going to be an issue keeping up the pace with a Texas Tech team on a losing streak and in a desperate need of a sixth win to get bowl eligible.
The Wildcats have thrown one touchdown pass in the last four games, and two in the last seven. This is the Big 12 – that doesn’t work.
Jett Duffey could always run, but stepping in for Alan Bowman, he threw for 444 yards and four scores in a brilliant day against Texas. The Red Raiders lost, but the offense still worked.
With no pressure coming from the Kansas State defensive front, Duffey should be able to run around and do whatever he needs. Considering the Wildcats are last in the Big 12 in third down stops, the Red Raiders should have some fun.
One Reason Why Kansas State Will Win
Is this the last home game for Bill Snyder?
It would be very, very Bill Snyder to never show his intentions or turn the spotlight on himself, but considering the lousy season, and the calls coming out from some that it’s time to move on, this game might just have the air of something special.
And Kansas State is still in the hunt for bowl eligibility, too.
The Texas Tech defense has been better at times, but it’s dead last in the Big 12 in yards allowed. It got run on for over 300 yards by Oklahoma a few weeks ago, but it’s the pass defense that’s a problem.
This might just be the first time since the West Virginia game almost two months ago that the K-State passing game hits 200 yards.
Texas Tech will commit penalties and will throw picks. To stay in this, Kansas State has to take advantage of every opportunity.
What’s Going To Happen
Can Kansas State win the turnover margin? It was +2 against Kansas and +2 against Oklahoma State, and won both home games. It was -4 total in the last four losses.
The Wildcats need to force a slew of mistakes to pull this off, and they’ll get them.
Texas Tech has been on the negative side in the turnover margin in three of the last four games, and has only won the turnover battle twice in the last eight games.
But here’s the problem. It takes a whole lot of points to beat Texas Tech.
In the five losses, the Red Raiders gave up 40 points or more in each one. In the five wins, it gave up more than 17 points just once.
Kansas State will keep it close, but it won’t put up enough offensive pop to pull this off.
