Kansas State (5-6) vs. Iowa State (6-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Kansas State Will Win
The desperation of bowl eligibility might just be enough to pull off another stunner.
It took too much work to beat Kansas, but the defense banged up the Texas Tech quarterbacks in last week’s 21-6 win. And now, the K-State D has allowed just 17 points or fewer in four of the last five games. The offensive punch and firepower aren’t there, but the team has been able to stay in games against the league’s mid-level offenses.
Iowa State has been good overall, and it’s going bowling, but the O fell flat at the wrong time, taking itself out of Big 12 title contention with a loss to Texas last week.
Kansas State is a bit more motivated, and that has to translate into a good day from the ground attack – or else.
The Wildcats are 5-1 when rushing for 150 yards or more, and 0-5 when they don’t. Unfortunately …
One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win
Kansas State is about to run into the Big 12’s best run defense. With just three touchdown passes in the last eight games, the Wildcats don’t do enough to overcome the other issues. If Iowa State can get up early, it’s over.
The issue is an O line that doesn’t generate enough of a push, and that’s where the Cyclone defensive front comes in. How good has it been? It has yet to allow a 100-yard rusher, and if Kansas State has to run for 150, good luck – only Oklahoma and Texas have been able to do it.
The Cyclones are playing like Kansas State is supposed to. They’re not turning the ball over and they’re owning the time of possession battle – they’re dictating the tempo.
They’re better when it comes to turnover margin, penalties, and controlling the clock. If Iowa State can do that again, they’re going to win a relatively low scoring fight – this should be played at its own speed.

What’s Going To Happen
Brock Purdy might be coming off a clunker in the loss to Texas, but that’s about to change.
The Iowa State quarterback will have a decent day, the defense will make Kansas State too one-dimensional, and the Wildcats will miss out on a bowl, fueling speculation that this might be it for the Bill Snyder era.
