Fresno State (8-1) vs. Boise State (7-2) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
These two plays late last year in the regular season, and it didn’t matter since they would rematch right away in the Mountain West Championship.
This time, it does make a difference, at least for Boise State.
The Bronco loss to San Diego State several weeks ago puts it behind Utah State in the standings. Since the Aggies never play anyone who’s any good – no, really, it doesn’t – and it gets San Jose State this week, they can can come close to clinching the Mountain if they win and the Broncos lose. If Boise State wins this week and beats New Mexico next week, that sets up the showdown with Utah State for the division.
For Fresno State, this matters to stay in the race for a New Year’s Six bowl slot, but in terms of the Mountain West fight, the big fish to fry is next week against San Diego State.
Beyond all of that, it’s one of the Mountain West games of the season, and it’s a measuring stick moment for both programs.
Shhhhhhh, it’s not supposed to be mentioned – especially to the College Football Playoff committee that currently has the Bulldogs at No. 23 – that cups of warm pudding have beaten more decent teams than Fresno State.
Fine, so beating Toledo is okay, and Nevada has been good enough to go bowling, but … whatever. To win in Boise, though, would take things to a whole other level.
The defense has been unbelievable, allowing seven points or fewer in four of the last five games. The line play on both sides has been fantastic, there aren’t any giveaways, and the offense has been efficient and effective at taking advantage of the defensive play.
Boise State’s good win is over … ummmmm … uhhhhhh … BYU? It’s had two tests to far – Oklahoma State and Diego State – and it failed both of them.
Fresno State is finally about to face a team with a killer pass rush, and an offense that converts a whole lot of third down opportunities.
Boise State is about to finally deal with a killer O line that should be able to handle that pass rush and is a brick wall on third downs.
In the end, Fresno State QB Marcus McMaryion will outplay Boise State’s Brett Rypien – but barely. The Broncos finally have to deal with a quarterback, and it’s going to have issues.
It’s never, ever, okay to go against Boise State at home in a big game, but Fresno State is way too sharp, playing way too well defensively, and is way too ready to show that it really does belong in the conversation for the NY6 if and when UCF falls.
And if it can all but knock out the defending Mountain West champs from the race, that’s fine, too.
