What’s Going To Happen
When last we saw these two, Florida Atlantic was applying a big-time wallop with a 41-17 win in the Conference USA championship after rolling to a 69-31 victory earlier in the year.
This time around, the Owls are just trying to stay alive for a bowl game.
The offense found its groove again over the last two weeks, rolling over FIU and WKU to at least stay in the hunt for a 13th game.
The hope of repeating as conference champs left a while ago, but winning this week or next week to get bowl eligible would still be a terrific accomplishment in Year Two under Lane Kiffin – just remember where the program was two seasons ago.
North Texas has also fizzled in conference play, with UAB owning the West and with two losses in the last three games. The offense is still fantastic, but the three losses on the season – all in conference play – were tight battles that went the wrong way.
And now it’s revenge time in the home finale. Maybe.
Two of the league’s biggest start are on display, starting with UNT’s Mason Fine. He has been a machine, throwing for 240 yards or more against everyone but Liberty earlier in the year. Best of all, he’s not turning the ball over. The pick thrown in last week’s loss to Old Dominion was just his second on the season.
Can FAU stop a decent passing team? Nope.
Owl RB Devin Singletary is at it again, running for 20 touchdowns on the season with six 100-yard running performances in the last seven games.
Can North Texas stop the run? Lately, yup.
FAU has a major turnover issue, and North Texas doesn’t. The Mean Green will be a +2 at home, Fine will be fantastic … but it won’t be enough.
The Owl defense has started to play well over the last few weeks, and the offense will find the balance to keep the current hot streak going against a reeling Mean Green team.
It’s Lane Kiffin on a big stage. His team will show up.
