Duke (5-3) vs. Miami (5-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
Miami is the one team in the ACC that has run out of gas faster than Duke.
The Hurricanes still don’t have a passing game, the offense can’t score, and it seems to have lost its way after two rough losses to relatively average Virginia and Boston College teams.
The Canes tried to mess around with the quarterback situation, and now they’re just not getting anything out of the position. Malik Rosier continues to give it a go after N’Kosi Perry struggled, and it hasn’t been fun.
The passing attack has failed to hit the 200-yard mark in three of the last four games, an dover the last two weeks there’s been little down the field with just one touchdown pass and five picks.
Duke might not be doing anything all that well lately, but the secondary has held up just fine, failing to allow 200 yards through the air in any of the last three games.
Combine the lack of a consistent passing game with a massive turnover issue – ten in the last five games – and Duke has to force a few mistakes and stuff everything the Canes are doing on the ground.
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
It’s not like the wheels have totally come off.
The defensive front had a tough day against the Boston College running game, and Virginia played a great game controlling things throughout.
Duke is miserable at keeping control of the clock or games – time of possession doesn’t work for the Blue Devils – and it’s not doing enough to move the chains.
The O line has been fine, and it’s not getting gouged, but the Miami defensive front has a way of dictating the action. It’s still No. 1 in the nation in tackles for loss, and it’s still as disruptive as any D in the country.
The Canes were able to come up with ten takeaways over the last four games, and this week, they have to keep the pressure on Duke QB Daniel Jones throughout the game.
Pitt didn’t do enough to get him last week, and he went off. He’ll throw for over 200 yards, but he’ll also give up a few picks.
What’s Going To Happen
17 seems to be the magic number – or around there.
Duke might have put up 45 in the loss to Pitt last week, but before that, it was 5-0 when scoring more than 14 points, and 0-2 when it scored just two touchdowns.
Miami is 0-3 when scoring 17 or fewer, and 5-0 when scoring more. All three Hurricane losses were away from Hard Rock, and now, back at home, the team will come up with a good performance.
Don’t expect a shootout, and don’t look for anything magical out of the two offenses looking for survival. It’ll be a low-scoring battle, and the Canes are better equipped for that.
