Duke (7-3) vs. Clemson (10-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
The Blue Devils aren’t going to run on this Clemson defensive front, but the offense doesn’t beat itself, there won’t be enough penalties to be a problem, and the quarterback and schemes are there to make this very, very interesting.
Okay, Daniel Jones. This is your chance at college football immortality.
The Duke veteran quarterback hasn’t been consistent, but he was fantastic in the win at Northwestern early in the season, managed to rip up Pitt a few weeks ago for almost 400 yards, and threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns last week against North Carolina.
The O line is just good enough to avoid being overwhelmed, the quick-hitting passes could and should be just enough to keep things moving, and best of all, there’s no pressure.
The Blue Devils are going bowling, they’ve had a strong season – and now they can turn it loose and make something special happen.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
Yeah, Daniel Jones is good, and Duke head coach David Cutcliffe is brilliant enough to come up with a few wrinkles, but there’s no overcoming the brick wall of a Tiger line.
The Clemson defensive front decided a few weeks ago that it was time to destroy everything in its path.
It was terrific over the first part of the season, but over the last four weeks … yeeeeeeesh.
It’s almost unfair how good this front four is playing, no matter who’s getting their chances in the mix – the twos are making a slew of big things happen in the backfield game-in-and-game-out, too.
It ate Florida State’s lunch a few weeks ago, blasted on Boston College in the national spotlight game last Saturday night, and lately, it’s not allowing a thing on the ground.
On the other side, this is a game for the Clemson offensive line.
Duke’s defensive front has been destroyed over the last few weeks by Pitt, Miami and North Carolina, allowing just over 1,000 rushing yards in the three games and ten touchdowns.
Rely on Travis Etienne and the running game to go off, make sure Travis Lawrence doesn’t take any unnecessary chances, and rely on that defensive front to clean up everything else.
What’s Going To Happen
This is a dangerous game for Clemson if it doesn’t keep the swagger going.
The South Carolina game next week is the one the team will be fired up for, and this isn’t the final home game of the year, so it’s all about wanting to continue to try proving a point. At the moment, this defensive line is playing like it’s on a mission.
And Duke just happens to be in the way.
