You’ve Read This Far, So You Get Three Honest Thoughts On The Conference USA Championship
– There’s still a bowl game to go, but this would be a fantastic payoff for Middle Tennessee QB Brent Stockstill, head coach Rick Stockstill’s son. He’s been beaten up, banged up, and very, very productive throughout his four-plus years at the helm, throwing 103 touchdown passes and just 31 picks.
How good a career has he had? He’s just 12 yards away from passing Drew Brees for 42nd on the college football all-time passing leader list, and he’s a mere 39 yards away from passing Carson Palmer to get into the top 40. Between this and the bowl game, if he can get 416 more yards, he’ll pass Jared Goff and be just outside of the all-time top 30.
– It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any national interest in this whatsoever. It’s not as sexy as it would’ve been if Florida Atlantic and North Texas had been good enough to get here again, but this should still be entertaining as long as it’s not a repeat of last week.
– This is a massive moment for UAB. It’s been a great story, but it was even more amazing last year, right up until it got an atomic wedgie pulled over its head by Ohio in the 41-6 Bahamas Bowl loss. Considering it’s 120th in strength of schedule right now according to the NCAA – six Conference USA teams in the bottom 11, by the way – this is prove it time.
Super. So Who’s Going To Win The Conference USA Championship?
UAB bounced back big from the strange loss to Coastal Carolina earlier in the season to shock Tulane, and the D really is that good. But can the team just turn it on again?
Middle Tennessee comes in winning five of its last six games, and the one loss was a good fight against Kentucky on the road. UAB will be far, far better than it was last week in the 27-3 loss to the Blue Raiders, but it still won’t be enough.
The Middle Tennessee defense will still be strong, but Brent Stockstill won’t hit 22-of-29 passes again. UAB will look more like the team that was so good in the middle of the season, but the Blue Raiders have yet to lose a home game, and three of the four losses were to Vanderbilt, Georgia and Kentucky.
It’ll be a really, really good game, with the Blue Raiders getting out on a walk-off field goal.
