Colorado (5-6) vs. California (6-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Colorado Will Win
Yes, head coach Mike MacIntyre was fired, but it’s not like the season is over.
Yes, the team was in a freefall. Yes, the offense has gone bye-bye. Yes, it’s been an ugly run. But …
Yes, the team is still a win away from going bowling. And yes, now that the coaching situation has been dealt with, the pressure is actually off. From all indications, this is a bit more of a relaxed team, and now it’ll be up to interim head man Kurt Roper to get that sixth win.
It shouldn’t take that much offense to get this done.
Cal might be playing well right now defensively, but it’s not scoring enough to pull away and make this a blowout, and the Pac-12’s worst passing game isn’t going to take over.
The pieces are still there for the Buffs to get the air show back up and flying again, but …
One Reason Why California Will Win
Everyone needs time to work.
What’s been the biggest issue lately for Colorado? The offensive line has been awful at keeping everyone out of the backfield.
Utah came up with six sacks last week in the 30-7 win, Washington State piled up three the week before in its blowout win, and Arizona got to Steven Montez five times.
The Cal pass rush is good enough to come up with enough steady pressure to be a problem, but it’ll be the secondary that should take over.
The Bears aren’t allowing much of anything downfield. The Pac-12’s best pass defense will give up yards, but it won’t get hit for a slew of big plays and it’s great at taking the ball away.
This should be a low-scoring fight of a game, and Cal has the better defense.
What’s Going To Happen
The Colorado offense might let it rip, but the Cal defense that was already on a roll – allowing fewer than 20 points in four straight games – is rested after last week’s game against Stanford was postponed.
The coaching change will help a wee bit, but the Bears will stick with the formula that’s been working, they’ll get the D off the field against the punchless Buff O that’s not cranking out the ground game, and they’ll go into the Big Game on a roll.
