As bad as the 49ers have been, and even thought they’ve lost three of the last four games, they’re technically still alive for eligibility, hosting FIU this week and closing out at Florida Atlantic. They’ll lose both games.
Florida Atlantic (5-5)
This isn’t the season the Owls were hoping for, and it’ll get scary after having to play at North Texas this week. They’ll have to beat Charlotte just to get to six wins, and they’ll do it.
Southern Miss (4-5)
Losers of two of the last three games, and having missed the Appalachian State game because of Hurricane Florence, the Golden Eagles have to beat both Louisiana Tech and win at UTEP to get bowling. They won’t do it.
After beating Wisconsin, the Cougars were hoping for a big season – but it doesn’t matter. With no conference title to play for, all that matters is simply becoming bowl eligible, and they’ll do it against New Mexico State this week. They close out with the rivalry game at Utah – that’s bigger for them than any bowl.
The Flames can’t go bowling in their first season in the transition into the FBS world, but getting to six wins would be a big boost going into the off-season. They’ll lose at Auburn this week, but they’ll beat New Mexico State and Norfolk State to get there.
The defending MAC champs have lost two straight and five of the last seven, but beating Northwestern will be their big moment. They’ll beat Bowling Green this week, but will lose at Ohio and in the early December game at South Carolina – Akron’s date with Nebraska was cancelled because of lightning, and the Gamecocks need an extra game because the Marshall of Hurricane Florence.
Miami University (4-6)
The RedHawks just can’t get their season going, and now, after stunning Ohio, they have to end with a big push. Beat Northern Illinois and take out Ball State, and they get to six. They’ll lose to the Huskies, who need a win to lock up the West title.
The defending MAC champs have been a disappointment, but they’ll close strong with wins at Kent State and to Central Michigan. It won’t be a West title, but at seven wins, they’ll get one of the MAC’s bowl slots.
