You’ve Read This Far, So You Get Three Honest Thoughts On The Big Ten Championship
– No matter what happens in the earlier games, things get interesting if Ohio State wins. If Oklahoma wins and the Buckeyes take down the Wildcats, that will probably make it the first time a 12-win Power Five champion doesn’t get into the College Football Playoff.
The committee isn’t into worrying about the precedents set by the other seasons, but if 12-1 Ohio State doesn’t get in, that will make it three straight years without the Big Ten Champion in the College Football Playoff.
– It’s going to destroy Michigan fans if Ohio State goes back to being the Ohio State of the first 11 games. Now there’s no excuse, because we know what this Buckeye team is capable of – it has to do that again, only better.
That might not mean a 59-point wipeout of the Wildcats, but we know that if Ohio State is sharp and well motivated, Northwestern doesn’t even need to get off the bus. But that hasn’t been the case for most of this season, and it would be absolutely inexcusable for this team with this talent to be anything less than amazing with everything on the line.
– No, this isn’t the worst-ever Big Ten Championship matchup. The 2012 game was a Wisconsin team that finished third in its own division – remember, Ohio State and Penn State weren’t eligible because they were naughty – hanging 70 points on a mediocre Nebraska team.
There’s absolutely no pressure on Northwestern, even though Pat Fitzgerald would suggest otherwise. Keep doubting this team, and keep underestimating it – it got here. Who else would you rather see from the West, Wisconsin? Iowa? Purdue? Okay, maybe Purdue, but it’s not like there was a better option on the table.
Super. So Who’s Going To Win The Big Ten Championship?
A lot of this depends on what happens over the course of the rest of the day, but Ohio State is going to drop the hammer no matter what.
That Michigan game was more like what this team can really do and what it is – we think. Even if the Buckeyes don’t have the intensity and focus turned to 11, the speed of the skill players will be way too much for the Wildcats to handle.
Northwestern will be okay and hang around for a quarter, and then the explosion will come. Dwayne Haskins will throw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, an odd play will come from the Buckeye special teams or defense, and the world will turn to see what’s happening in the ACC Championship at halftime.
