Iowa State 28, Baylor 14
What Happened: The Cyclones got up 17-0 helped by a touchdown pass and a scoring run from Brock Purdy, and stayed ahead with Purdy eight-yard touchdown pass to Johnnie Lang for a 28-7 lead, but the game will be mostly remembered for a brawl – Iowa State RB David Montgomery and Baylor LB Greg Roberts were ejected.
Charlie Brewer threw two touchdown passes for Baylor, but the offense couldn’t push ahead in the second half after Iowa State bent, but didn’t break in the second half, because …
What Mattered: Purdy was excellent. Again. He completed 18-of-23 passes for 230 yards and a score, and he led the team with 56 rushing yards and a score on 12 carries. Montgomery ran for 53 yards before getting ejected.
– Brewer bombed away, completing 26-of-36 passes for 288 yards and two scores, and he led the team with 72 yards on 12 carries. Jalen Hurd caught a team-high five passes for 81 yards, and ran for 46 yards on eight carries.
– Baylor had the ball for almost 35 minutes and outgained Iowa State 505 yards to 355, but couldn’t close drives. Iowa State converted 7-of-11 third down chances to keep in control.
What It All Means: Baylor still has to come up with one more win to get bowl eligible. It has a real shot to do it against a dead TCU team up next, and then comes the neutral site date against Texas Tech. It just takes one.
– Iowa State stayed alive for the Big 12 title. It needs to win out, and it needs a West Virginia loss to get in. With a trip to Texas next week and Kansas State to close, it’s not going to be a breeze. But now, at least, the team is bowl eligible.
