Baylor (5-4) vs. Iowa State (5-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Baylor Will Win
There’s a chance Baylor might be able to out-Iowa State, Iowa State.
Beating Iowa State is mostly about control, and the Bears can do that.
Iowa State doesn’t convert on third down chances, and it’s still not running all that well, even though David Montgomery is doing just fine. It’s last in the Big 12 in both categories.
Baylor is fantastic at moving the chains, and it’s fantastic at controlling the clock. This isn’t the Art Briles era Baylor offense – it cares about time of possession, leading the Big 12 by keeping it for well over 32 minutes per game.
Get the running game going, win the game. Baylor is 4-0 this season when it runs for 190 yards or more – again, it’s about the control. However …
One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win
The Cyclones aren’t giving up a thing on the ground. No one has rushed for more than 150 yards on the D so far, with Oklahoma State only coming up with more than one rushing score. So far, Iowa State allowing fewer than three yards per carry – Baylor is going to have to throw to win.
Baylor QB Charlie Brewer came off the bench against Oklahoma State after going through the concussion protocol to hit 4-of-8 passes for 56 yards and two scores in the win. But in the last two games, he’s 5-of-16 for 78 yards and two touchdowns with three picks.
On the other side, Iowa State has one of the nation’s hottest receivers. The rise of QB Brock Purdy has led to Hakeem Butler blowing up, averaging 24 yards per catch with three straight 100-yard games. The 6-6, 225-pound is big, physical, and he’s hitting the home runs needed at the right time.
Combine the deep plays with the strong defensive play and the emergence of Purdy, and the Cyclones are playing well at the right time.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s the defense that’s making all the difference or Iowa State.
The offense isn’t just some cute thing that’s along for the ride – it’s able to keep up with the Big 12 heavyweight attacks – but it’s the play of the defensive front that will keep the Bear offense from going off.
Baylor might be vastly improved, and it’ll get that sixth win to go bowling next week against TCU, but Iowa State is too sharp and too hot right now.
