Tennessee 14, Charlotte 3
What Happened: Ugh. It’s a win for Tennessee. Other than that, it was a brutal game with little offense and no second half points. The Vols got all they needed in the first quarter on an 82-yard Marquez Callaway punt return for a score, and a 16-yard Josh Palmer touchdown catch. Charlotte managed a third quarter field goal … and that was it.
What Mattered: The Tennessee offensive line was awful. Charlotte seemingly lived in the backfield, holding the Vols to just 20 rushing yards. Jarrett Guarantano completed 16-of-21 passes for 172 yards and a score.
– The Tennessee defense was dominant. Daniel Bituli led the way with 13 tackles and one of the team’s eight tackles for loss. Charlotte managed just 244 yards of total offense, but the Vols only finished with 192.
What It All Means: It was brutal, but Tennessee busted a run of four losses in the last five games. Now at 4-5, it has to win two of its last three games to go bowling with Kentucky, Missouri and at Vanderbilt to go. To have any shot, the offense has to figure out how to get the running game back … fast.
