Arizona State (6-4) vs. Oregon (6-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win
There’s a whole lot to play for.
If Arizona State wins this week, it takes the Pac-12 South if Arizona loses to Washington State and Utah loses to Colorado. If the losses from the rivals don’t happen, then the Sun Devils can take the division by beating the Ducks this week, and taking out Arizona next week.
It’s a simple formula lately for ASU over the three game winning streak. Run the ball well, generate pressure into the backfield, and take over games with great line play.
And it helps that Eno Benjamin has turned in one of the best seasons by any running back in college football.
The Sun Devils are 5-0 this season when running for 200 yards or more, and they’ve hit the 250-yard mark in each of the last three games with eight touchdowns.
Benjamin has done most of the heavy lifting, with 175 yards or more in each of the three, cranking out a massive 34-carry, 182-yard game against UCLA to get bowl eligible. Now he gets to go against an Oregon defense that’s nothing special against good, tough ground attacks.
One Reason Why Oregon Will Win
Justin Herbert needs to be the best player on the field.
Arizona State’s secondary will give up yards and passes. The Sun Devils have allowed four of the last five passing games they’ve faced to complete over 70% of their passes. Herbert might not be deadly sharp – he’s only completing 59% of his passes – but he has to be on.
He’s not making mistakes – with just one pick in the last six games – and he’s able to push the ball deep lately, but he hasn’t hit more than 61% of his throws in any of the last five games, losing three of them.
This is the game the scouting types are going to be really, really interested in.
Arizona State leads the Pac-12 in tackles for loss, and the pass rush brings the pressure from all sides. Now it’s up to the potential NFL franchise guy to play like it. Again, he’s not making mistakes, and he’s been able to keep the chains moving – he’s excellent on third downs.
Even though he’s just a junior, this might be his final home game as an Oregon Duck.
What’s Going To Happen
Oregon might have lost three of its last four games, but all three were on the road. Arizona State has been playing well, but it fought to get by USC away from Tempe, and lost to San Diego State, Washington, and Colorado in the other three away dates.
Benjamin will have a great game, and the Sun Devils will seem like they always have the ball, but Herbert and the Ducks will come through with a tough, tight win in Autzen.
If UCLA’s Wilton Speight can take target practice on the ASU defense – like he did last week – Herbert should be able to come through.
