Akron (4-7) vs. South Carolina (6-5) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
After the collapse to Florida a few weeks ago, and with the 56-35 loss to Clemson last week, South Carolina could use a nice and easy blowout win again just to make the fan base a little bit happier.
7-5 looks a whole lot better than 6-6.
To get there, the offense might just open it up again after bombing away on the Tigers.
South Carolina couldn’t handle the Clemson offense, but the Clemson secondary couldn’t handle the South Carolina passing game. Jake Bentley went off – throwing for 510 yards and five scores for his third 300-yard day in four weeks – but it wasn’t enough.
He doesn’t have to do that to get by Akron, but another big performance would set the tone for the bowl game on through next season.
Akron head coach Terry Bowden might be familiar with SEC life, but he doesn’t have the team that can do anything special if South Carolina is sharp.
The big claim to the season was the comeback win over Northwestern, but with no running game and an offense that’s among the nation’s worst – averaging under 300 yards per game – it’s going to be a rough run if South Carolina decides to try.
The Zip pass defense is just good enough to keep this from being a total wipeout, but the Gamecocks should be able to get up early and make this a breeze. It won’t take more than a few early scores to be able to coast.
