West Virginia (5-0) vs. Iowa State (2-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win
The Mountaineer passing game came into the season with ridiculously high expectations, and it’s more than meeting them.
There have been a few bumpy spots, but Will Grier has been generally unstoppable with 332 yards or more in every game, connecting on 71% of his throws so far.
Even where there are problems, he answers with big scoring drives in a flurry.
Iowa State doesn’t have the offense to keep up the pace.
For the first time all season long, Iowa State got past the 27 point mark with a 48-42 win over Oklahoma State – but that’s probably an aberration. It’s going to take at least 40 points to get into the discussion with this Mountaineer team. Even with the tweaks to the offense, the Cyclones don’t have the firepower.
West Virginia can move the chains at will. Iowa State can’t.
One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win
Welcome to the Big 12, Brock Purdy.
The Iowa State offense was functional, but it didn’t have the passing game to keep up with any of the good Big 12 offenses. Enter Purdy, a true freshman baller who got his chance against Oklahoma State, and … kaboom.
18-of-23, 318 yards, four touchdowns and a pick.
On the other side, as amazing as Grier has been, he’s also had an interception problem lately with three against Kansas last week and six in the last four games. Iowa State doesn’t do a whole lot to take the ball away, but this week, it has to come up with a whole lot of big defensive plays to slow down the machine.
The Mountaineer offensive front will give up sacks here and there – it hasn’t been pushed too hard yet. Iowa State has just enough up front to bring the pressure and force a just enough mistakes to keep this tight.
What’s Going To Happen
Purdy will be strong – assuming Kyle Kempt can’t go and/or the coaching staff sticks with the hot hand – but West Virginia has film on him now to prepare for what’s coming.
The big Iowa State receivers will be a problem at times, but there isn’t enough of a running game to help the cause – and Purdy won’t go off on the ground like he did against Oklahoma State.
The Cyclones will keep this tight at home for a while, and then Grier will take the Mountaineers on two fast scoring drives to pull ahead and stay there. It’ll be a strong effort by Iowa State, but it simply won’t have enough scoring ability to keep up.
