Wake Forest (3-4) vs. Louisville (2-5) Game Preview
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
The Louisville offensive line is a disaster.
There might be decent skill parts in the Cardinal offense, but there’s no Lamar Jackson to move around and make up for the deficiencies on the front five.
The quarterbacks are under constant pressure, they’re throwing a ton of picks, and the offense – the Bobby Petrino offense – is the worst in the ACC in both scoring and yards.
The Wake Forest defense might be having its issues, and it’s not generating the pressure behind the line like it has over the last few years, but this is the time to crank it up.
Offensively, yeah, there have been problems for the Demon Deacons. That’s what happens when you face the Florida State defensive front. And the Clemson defense. And Notre Dame. There should be just enough balance against the mediocre Cardinal D to keep things moving, and then the other side of the ball needs to take care of the rest.
The Demon Deacon lines have to be better than the Cardinal lines, and they should be.
One Reason Why Louisville Will Win
So what’s going right?
The Cardinals are last in the ACC or close to it in most key offensive and defensive categories, and there’s just nothing positive happening. The D isn’t generating enough takeaways, the O isn’t moving the ball – nothing is working in a lost season.
However, the Wake Forest defense might be the cure for that.
Again, this isn’t the Demon Deacon defense of the last few years that lived in the backfield, and it’s getting hammered against the un.
Commit to the ground game – pound away 40 times or more – and the results will be there. FSU only ran for 132 yards last week, but that’s going Wisconsin compared to what the Seminole offense has done all year on the ground.
Before that, Wake Forest gave up 220 yards or more in each of the previous four games. Louisville has to simplify all of this. Run, run, and keep running – the results will be there.
What’s Going To Happen
Which team will pull up out of the nosedive and keep desperate bowl hopes alive? These are the two worst teams in the ACC, and the loser’s season is effectively over.
Louisville has been the more spectacular failure so far, but at home, it’s going to finally get a little bit going on offense, the defense will get a decent day out of the secondary, and it’ll start to look a little bit like the team that was supposed to show up after the Alabama defeat.
It won’t be anything amazing, but for the Cardinals, it’ll take whatever it can get right now.
