Virginia Tech (3-2) vs. North Carolina (1-3) Game Preview

One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Ryan Willis is coming through.

He might not have pulled off the win over Notre Dame last week, but that was hardly his fault. Okay, so he wasn’t amazing, but he threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns and a pick to at least move the offense a little bit. That was coming off a 332-yard, three touchdown day in the win over Duke.

North Carolina’s pass defense has actually been okay – the issues are on the other side.

Over the four games, the offense has only scored more than 19 points once, it’s a disaster on third downs, and there’s no consistent downfield passing game.

Outside of a few runs by Notre Dame’s Dexter Williams, the Virginia Tech run defense is excellent. If the Tar Heels don’t get things moving on the ground, the offense isn’t going anywhere. However …

One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win

This is the time to get the North Carolina passing game started.

Chazz Surratt returned last week from suspension, and the results were … unfortunate. He completed just 4-of-10 passes for ten yards with three picks in the loss to Miami, but the passing game showed some pop against Pitt two weeks ago with Nathan Elliott going off for over 300 yards with two scores.

Virginia Tech has a pass rush, but it’s not helping a beleaguered secondary – the Hokies are dead last in the ACC in pass defense.

They’re allowing teams to hit 64% of their passes with everyone cranking out well over 200 yards. After the three picks against Florida State to open things up, the Hokies have generated just two interceptions since.

But overall for UNC, it’s about turnovers. It couldn’t stop giving the ball away in the losses to Cal and Miami – just slow those down. Don’t get destroyed in the turnover margin, have a shot.

What’s Going To Happen

Which teams will show up?

Notre Dame is simply better than Virginia Tech, but if the Hokie team that showed up against Duke makes its way to Chapel Hill, it wins with ease.

North Carolina has shown glimpses, but not enough of them to think the offense can be consistent – even after getting two weeks off to rest up.

The Hokie defense will be solid against the run, and the 250 yards allowed to the UNC passing game won’t be a big deal. Virginia Tech gets off to a decent start and stays ahead the whole way.
