USF (7-0) vs. Houston (6-1) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
Yeah, UCF is in this mix as well – duh – Cincinnati is solid, and Temple is unbeaten in conference play, but here we go with the first massive conference game of the American Athletic season.
USF might be 7-0, but it’s a really, really soft 7-0.
There isn’t a win on the schedule over a team that will end up going bowling – maybe Georgia Tech, but that will take a minor miracle – and it’s the one offense that hasn’t been able to put up a gajillion points on UConn.
But you are what your record is, and USF is still 7-0.
The pass rush is suffocating, but it’s not helping a run defense that’s getting gashed for big, big yards. The offense doesn’t do much to control the clock, and there are way too many penalties, but the attack cranks out over 500 yards per game.
How bad is the Houston pass defense? It just played Navy – so factor that offense into the mix – and the Cougars are still dead last in college football in pass defense. USF might be bad at time of possession, but Houston is dead last – it just doesn’t care about ball control whatsoever.
That’s okay when you’re averaging 555 yards per game.
The Cougars have a whole slew of issues, but the offense makes up for them. D’Eriq King bombed away for 413 yards and three scores on Navy, and now he’s up to 23 touchdown passes and just three picks.
He and Houston will run well, the offense will put up huge numbers, and the defense will survive a whole lot of big plays to hand USF its first loss of the season. Get ready for a wild shootout with over 900 total yards.
