Troy (5-2) vs. South Alabama (2-5) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
Troy is trying to keep pace with Appalachian State and Georgia Southern in the East race, while South Alabama is trying to stay alive in a log-jammed West.
Finally, the Jaguars got their second win of the season with a blowout over Alabama State, but they’ve been rocked by just about everyone else so far – the only other win coming against Texas State early on.
The defense has been bad, the offense worse, with the biggest overall problem being lots and lots and lots of penalties. USA is among the worst teams in the nation in getting flagged, giving away almost 93 yards per game.
Mostly, the Jaguars have to hope the Troy offense sputters and coughs like it did in the loss to Liberty two weeks ago, getting little through the air from backup QB Sawyer Smith – star Kaleb Barker is out again – but he can run.
USA has to stop the run to win, and that’s going to be a problem. The linebackers don’t do enough to get behind the line, and so far this year, teams are averaging close to five yards per carry with Appalachian State and Memphis gashing the front just a few week ago.
The Trojan pass rush will be the difference. The offense might not do anything amazing, but the D will get behind the line just enough to screw up the USA offense on key downs.
Don’t expect pretty, but after the Liberty performance, Troy will take it.
